An Imam who recently got married has just discovered that his new wife is a man. A local daily newspaper reported that Imam’s ‘male wife’ true identity was discovered when he was caught in the act of stealing and arrested by local police few weeks ago in the central Ugandan district of Kayunga,.
Imam Sheikh Mohammed Mutumba’s marital woes came to public knowledge few weeks after their wedding when a female police officer reported that the arrested burglar was male after conducting a body search. According to the account of a cleric at the imam’s mosque, it is possible he was deceived because his bride “refused to undress while they slept.”
The Imam of Kyampisi Noor mosque actually wedded a 27-year male whose real name is Richard Tumushabe and not Swabullah Nabukeera as he had claimed.
The Imam has since been suspended from clerical duties by the mosque. He has also been charged for having wedded a fellow man in the Islamic culture (Nikah) and remanded in prison, while the ‘wife’ has appeared before a court. Both Imam and his wife face the charge of having unnatural carnal knowledge with a person against the order of nature.
The story has generated heated debate on social media with some arguing that the Imam cannot claim innocence of his wife’s true gender, and as such the story suggests a same-sex marriage. Other people believed that the wife may be a transgender. So, the couple are not homosexuals.
However, local police confirmed that the ‘man wife’ Tumushabe had duped a number of men who fell in love with ‘her’ and later stole their money.
Gay sex and marriage are criminal offences in Uganda. Many Ugandans believe homosexuality is imported from the West.
