Private laboratories group, Lancet Laboratories has announced that South Africans can have a walk-in private coronavirus at their laboratories for R1,200.
Prof Eftyhia Vardas, the laboratories’ clinical virologist said that “Lancet Laboratories will be offering testing for SARS-CoV-2 from March 9. Epidemiological information will still be collected on all patients and all results will be shared with the NICD, which remains the reference centre for this epidemic.”
Currently, to test for coronavirus symptoms, South Africans have to go to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases (NICD) and general practice doctors.
The current laboratory diagnostic tests for the virus are done by using a technique called polymerase chain reaction or PCR.
This is why Lancet Laboratories offer is a welcome development as this would reduce time of waiting to confirm coronavirus status on suspected cases. It will also reduce burdens on the National Institute of Communicable Diseases who, Dr Sibongile Walaza, NICD medical epidemiologist, said to have tested 200 people with 144 patients under investigation and one tested positive
