Parents have been asked to expose children with bow legs to sunlight in order to correct the deformity. The advice was given by Dr Umaru Habila, Chief Consultant and Associate Professor, Orthopedic and Trauma Unit, National Hospital, Abuja during an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria.
The medical doctor explained that exposure to sunlight helps a child with bow leg deformity to absorb vitamin D and calcium both of which are necessary for healthy bones.
Dr. Habila allayed worries about bow legs explaining that it is a natural development in children while growing up. He however warned that certain health conditions such as bone malformations or deficiency of some vital mineral and nutrients might also be responsible for bow legs deformity in children. According to the medical doctor, bow legs in some cases may be a form of abnormality or rockets.
“Like in the case of a child who develops K-leg at the age of one year and some months, it is abnormal, they are supposed to have a bit of bowleg. These could be rickets most likely the bone is soft because of lack of some minerals,” the doctor said.
Dr. Habila recommended that children with bowlegs deformity should be placed on vitamin D, protein, minerals and vegetables and other healthy diets and regular medical check ups. This he said will help to gradually straighten the deformed bones.
However, the doctor advised that surgical operation is required for children above three years old who suffer bow leg or struggle to walk.
Bow legs are also known as k-leg, knocked knees in some countries.
