South Africa on Fire as Protestors Defy Lockdown In Johannesburg, Burn Tyres Over Food Parcels

The police were called out to Eloff Street in central Joburg on Tuesday morning, where demonstrators had blocked off the road with rocks and burned tyres.

Public order police officers are investigating why a group of Joburg residents decided to violate the lockdown regulations by staging a protest in the CBD.

The Joburg Metro Police Department said that the community claimed that they hadn’t received food parcels that were promised to them.

Public order policing officers have dispersed protesters who gathered in the Johannesburg CBD.

Large gatherings are prohibited during the lockdown as outlined by the president, to avoid the rapid spread of COVID-19.
