A cash-in-transit (CIT) van was attacked by assailants in three cars this morning in Kagiso west of Joburg.
According to various reports, the CIT vehicle was rammed, which caused an explosion that sent cash flying through the air, leaving another vehicle in flames.
In a video shared on Facebook, people can be seen rushing to the scene trying to get their hands on the money before the authorities arrived.
However, it’s not clear if they managed to get away with any money, and if the burning car belonged to them.
According to the police spokeswoman Lieutenant-Colonel Brenda Muridili, the thugs a BMW and two A4 sedans in the robbery they also used explosives to gain access to the cash.
She revealed that they fled with an undisclosed amount of money and left cash scattered on the road.
3 hours after the incident, a 56-year-old man was caught with some of the notes by the Soweto Flying Squad in Diepkloof.
Apparently they stopped a suspicious grew VW Tiguan while patrolling and the driver refused to be searched.
