Maryam Abacha, wife of late General Sani Abacha broke her long silence and said there are lots of lies about the monies Abacha stole and kept in foreign banks and that her late husband was betrayed by many people in Nigeria.
She is taken aback that Abacha was not described a thief and looter when he was alive.
In her words, “How come this man was not a thief until he died? What is this amount of money after 22 years you say oh we have found this amount of money and we’re bringing it back? It is a shame to tell lies on a dead man! It is a shame to tell lies on your leader”.
She said God will vindicate her family and convict the liars who continually use her husband as a scape goat of corruption because he is no longer alive”. She said: “If he had done wrong, God knows. If other people are putting the wrong on him, it is a matter of time. They will kneel down like America is kneeling down now. Anybody that is evil will kneel down just like this corona has come to shut this world.”
She regretted the way Kano people are treating her family as an outcast especially the people she claimed her husband helped when he was alive.
The widow said Abacha laboured and planted in Kano but that Kano people hate her family for no just cause.
“They just hate us. But why? It is Haram and Allah is watching us.
It is worthy of note to state that Recall Hamza Al Mustapha, Chief Security Officer to Abacha said all the recovered monies connected to Abacha were saved in foreign banks.
Ala Mustapha said the decision to put the monies in foreign banks was made collectively made by key stakeholders in Nigerian to save Nigeria from foreign sanctions.
He said those who made the decision included emirs, chiefs and high placed people from the southern and the northern parts of Nigeria.
Between 1998 and 2020, over $3.624 billion allegedly looted by Abacha has been recovered from four countries.
Late General Sani Abacha (GCFR) was a Nigerian military general who served as the military head of state of Nigeria from 1993 until his death in 1998.
He was also Chief of Army Staff between 1985 to 1990; Chief of Defence Staff between 1990 to 1993; and Minister of Defence.
He allegedly died when he ate a poisonous apple given him by imported prostitutes.
