Video South African Student Riding Bed Trolley in Isolation Centre Stirs Uproar

A video of a boy riding a bed trolley across a coronavirus ward in South Africa stirs controversy.

Some social media users were amused and others enraged over the incident. Health officials delve into the matter with criticism.

Eastern Cape Health Department spokesman Sizwe Kupelo said the boy in the video is among 204 who tested positive to Covid-19 at Makaula Senior Secondary School in KwaBhaca.

Mr Kupelo said the student appears energetic and in high spirits “meaning he will easily beat Covid-19, [but] the video is condemned in the strongest words possible”.

Mr Kupelo said they see his actions as a sign of ill-discipline blended with boredom.

He believed the pupil should rather use the 14 days in isolation to revise what he has learnt in school this year.

However, others on social media think the boy be praised for not cowing to fear of death over Covid-19 infection.

Some said the boy has inspired them that Covid-19 may not be as lethal as they had believed.
