Being a different skin tone to someone else should not be a problem but it has shown to become a big problem amongst people of all races.
This has become just as bad as racism because people are still discriminating each other based on skin colour.
Black people, being the main victims and attackers when it comes to colourism, are always talking about how females with a lighter skin tone get more attention or job opportunities than women who are darker in complexion or how men with a darker skin tone get more attention and may be seen as superior to men with a lighter skin tone.
In 2019 Pearl Thusi had a clash with a Twitter user because of the topic.
The Twitter user called Pearl Thusi talentless and suggested that she only got top gigs because she was light-skinned.
Another Twitter user stated that light-skinned people get all the “good” jobs in the entertainment industry such as being in romantic movies or series, while dark-skinned people are usually slaves in movies or series.
When asked in an interview a lady named Lillian Mofokeng, who is 35-years-old woman in the corporate world, stated that when it comes to colourism it does not matter if you are qualified or experienced in the workplace.
She also went on to say that when she was younger her friends were dark-skinned, she was the lightest in complexion, and they were always criticized to a point that they started trying different lotions in order to have a lighter complexion, their self-esteem would be lost as men also wanted light-skinned girlfriends and wives.
20-years-old Bonita Ranta, a woman aspiring to be in the corporate world, who was also interviewed stated that in the corporate world colourism exists, as light-skinned people (mainly females) are the ones being hired to be receptionists because companies want the ‘Face of the company’ to ‘attract’ customers.
This colourism topic is not only discussed in work places but is also a topic when it comes to relationships, Regaogetswe Calvin Moraba, 23-years-old male who is studying to be in the media industry, stated that most women think that dating a light-skinned man is not okay because they have a certain perception about light-skinned men.
He also went to say that people should not be judged based on the colour of their skin as to whether they could be a good partner for one.
