Jurnee Smollett, who started acting the age of three revealed she has been sexually harassed in Hollywood among other film and television sets before she turned thirteen.
Reports confirmed that her long run in the entertainment industry did not protect her from its toxic culture.
She told Hollywood reporter that: “I don’t know that I can confidently say that I worked on one job prior to Lovecraft [Country]—from the time I was 12 on—where I hadn’t been sexually harassed, whether it was by an AD, a co-star, director, producer”.
She could only recall a few instances where she was not harassed or made to feel uncomfortable on set.
She noted that one co-star made an appalling remark about her body shortly before they shot an intimate scene.
Smollett was angry with her agent’s dismissive response to the incident of the ‘negative remark who’d “Oh, you know, he’s just being a man.”
She intends to change the narrative vowing to use the voices of those want to create change for the next generation of artists.
She said: “And we’re no longer asking for a seat at the table. We’re building our own moth…f..king table”.
