Edward Kisuze, a registrar in the College of Computing and Information Science and former Makerere University Senior Administrative Assistant has been sentenced to a fine, of Shs4m or two years in prison for sexually molesting a former student, Rachael Njoroge.
The ex university staff was convicted on the count of indecent assault but was acquitted of attempted rape.
Prosecution submitted that the indecent incident took place at Makerere University on April 13, 2018. On the said date, Ms Njoroge showed went to the registrar’s office to certify her transcript and pick her recommendation letter.
The conviction was anchored by Miriam Akello, the Buganda Road Chief Magistrate on Wednesday, September 30.
The chief magistrate argued that there was sufficient evidence from the prosecution that validated the case of indecent assault against Kisuze.
Ms Akello said said prosecution supplied all pertinent ingredients of indecent assault and the accused could not get less than a fine of Shs4m or in default serve two years in jail.
A viral photo that trended on social media show Kisuze was saulting Ms Njoroge, a former student at the faculty.
Ms Njoroge narrated told the court that the encounter with the former registrar occurred when she had gone to pick her transcript after graduation. It was stated that the former registrar locked her up in his office and started assaulting her.
The victim received her transcript at the registrar’s office and Kisuze rushed and locked the office door and started molesting her whilst she was looking through her transcript.
On the contrary, Kisuze countered that that the victim started lamenting how she had been mistreated by the university immediately she entered his office and the shetold him she was not well and was feeling dizzy. He added that she said she had not eaten anything since morning.
Kisuze defended himself further saying the victim tried to stand but she broke down in his office and he thought she was suffering from epilepsy.
The former registrar said he was stuck and shocked but was only able to give him drinking water and after a few minutes, she started gaining consciousness.
“She asked what I was doing with her. While wailing, she picked her phone from the bag”, the ex registrar added.
He denied that he was the person in the photos that Ms Njoroge took which trended on social media. He affirmed Ms Njoroge was framing him to destroy his 20-year career and ruin his marriage.
