The first-ever Oranyan Festival was initiated in 2012 by His Royal Higheness Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi III of Oyo.
The festival took place just few months after the rebranding of the Sango Festival in the honour of King Sango. Princess Folashade Adeyemi is the brain behind the rebranding of Sango festival.
She revealed that the creation of Oranyan festival was the initiative of Oba Adeyemi who played a remarkable role in rebranding and re-living King Sango’s royal exploits.
Sango Festival is an annual festival held among the Yoruba people in honour of Sango, the diety is known for thunder and fire. Sango was also a fiery warrior and warlord.

He was the third King of the Oyo Empire after succeeding Ajaka his elder brother.
In 2012, the festival was renamed to World Sango Festival by the government of Oyo State in other to make it attractive to the youths and elites.
